SHTP BOM welcomes the delegation of NASA and Vietnam National Satellite Center (06/12/2011)

December 06, 2012, the delegation of NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration - US), lead by Mr. Michael F. O’Brien, Associate Administrator of NASA’s International and Interagency Relations Division, accompanied by representatives of Vietnam National Satellite Center, paid a courtesy visit to SHTP.
Dr. Le Hoai Quoc - SHTP'S President and representative from Vietnam National Satellite Center
(third and fourth from left) discuss with NASA's representatives
It was a fruitful meeting during which the three parties discussed key issues related to SEVIR – a joint project between NASA and USAID (US Agency for International Development), whose tenor is to integrate satellite observations, ground-based data and forecast models to monitor and forecast environmental changes. The project effectively enables scientists, educators, project managers and policy implementers to better respond to a range of issues including disaster management, agricultural development, biodiversity conservation and climate change. Vietnam, as a dynamic and fast-growing country in Southeast Asia has become one of the potential candidates of SEVIR project.
Saigon Hi-Tech Park confirms a strong determination to support the successfulness of SEVIR project in Southeast Asia, either as the host country or as a dynamic partner
Understanding the important impacts of this project to the sustainable development of such an agriculture-based country as Vietnam, both Vietnam Government, represented by the Vietnam National Satellite Center and the Saigon Hi-Tech Park confirmed a strong determination to support the successfulness of SEVIR project in Southeast Asia, either as the host country or as a dynamic partner.
According to Mr. Michael F. O’Brien, USAID will soon release a Request for Proposal in the next few months. By studying proposals from candidate countries, NASA and USAID will select the best location to place the project. Key criteria for consideration include both the strategic location and the readiness of the candidate country in terms of infrastructure, equipment and human resources to carry out the project. However, Mr. Michael F. O’Brien once again emphasized: since the project’s positive impacts will not limited within the boundary of any country, NASA and USAID expect a large benefit for both the host country and other neighboring ones in the area./.
